Shower water is often overlooked in our daily lives, but it carries significant responsibility for me. My family and I moved from Atlanta to Los Angeles two years ago and settled into an apartment. But starting a year ago, my daughter started developing eczema. After visiting the doctor, we received treatment options and crucial advice: to shower in softened water. That’s when I realized the hard water in Los Angeles harmed my daughter’s delicate skin.
Exploration and Challenges of Shower Soft Water
Searching for solutions for softened shower water, I came across shower filters. However, after using one, I realized it didn’t soften the water, which my water quality testing kit confirmed. Next, I tried a showerstick that softened the water, but I found it cumbersome—after just one or two uses, it needed recharging, leaving me anxious about running out of soft water every time I showered. Eventually, I discovered a portable water softener, perfect for installation in the shower, which finally allowed me to enjoy softened water. However, I found a shortcoming after charging the portable water softener: the amount of water it could soften after charging was only half what it could initially handle, resulting in low regeneration efficiency.
The Ultimate Solution: Shower Water Softener System
After understanding how water softeners work, whole-home softeners inspired me. I implemented a small water pump to circulate concentrated saltwater, simulating the regeneration process of these systems. Although this method is slightly less effective than the initial performance, it achieves over 80% of that effectiveness, significantly improving regeneration efficiency. With this optimization, I increased the resin content, enhancing the initial volume of soft water. Additionally, to remove other harmful substances such as chlorine, disinfection byproducts, pesticides, and organic pollutants, I selected the latest activated carbon fiber filter to ensure pure water and provide extra protection for my daughter’s skin. Ultimately, we achieved the best shower water possible; my daughter’s eczema improved, and my wife’s hair and skin became healthier.
Attention to Detail
During the search for suitable components, I encountered several issues. To address the rusting problem of hose connections, I replaced all the fittings with brass materials; for the issue of the showerhead not aligning correctly, I chose a flexible shower hose that could swivel freely. All these efforts culminated in our ability to use a device that could both soften and purify the water.

However, I realized that many people faced similar challenges and often needed to make better decisions due to misleading information from vendors and a lack of awareness, wasting time and money. Thus, I decided to share my lessons and solutions with others, helping more people quickly find effective ways to resolve hair and skin issues.
Assemble Your Shower Soft Water System

- A portable water softener
- An activated carbon fiber filter
- A reinforced, explosion-proof stainless steel hose connecting the portable water softener and the activated carbon fiber filter
- Four all-copper fittings
- A shower hose (make sure the fittings are all-copper to prevent rust)
- A small water pump, hose, and corresponding all-copper nozzle for regenerating the portable water softener
- A water quality testing kit, primarily for testing water hardness and residual chlorine
- If the connections leak during assembly, you may need thread seal tape to ensure a tight fit.
